25 due to low attendance. The move comes after months of trying to increase attendance at the nutrition site located at the Henrietta Township Hall, 11120 Musbach Road in Munith. Attendance has declined to two or three people a day, Department on Aging Director Marce Wandell said. The DOA runs eight senior nutrition center sites throughout the county. When Department on Aging officials learned attendance was low at the Henrietta senior nutrition site in July, the hours of operation were reduced to one day a week. Seniors using the site have been notified of the closing and will be offered frozen meals to take home instead of a hot meal. Seniors could also visit one of the other seven nutrition center sites in the county. With so few taking advantage of the hot meal, the department had to find ways to reduce costs.

Diabetes Ailing 114 Million Chinese Risks Ravaging Budget

China’s Looming Diabetes Epidemic

The disease is putting an overwhelming burden on the country, according to the International Diabetes Federation, which says China spent $17 billion, or about $194 a patient, on diabetes last year. A study released last week found China has 114 million diabetics or 21.6 million more than the Brussels-based federation estimated in November. Extending average care to the enlarged population of diabetes sufferers would wipe out all of Chinas additional investment in health. The government budgeted spending 260.25 billion yuan ($42.5 billion) this year, a 27 percent increase, on basic medical services and subsidies for a state-run health insurance program.

Everyone’s a hero at Walk for Diabetes in Gulfport

As a result, a large number of patients do not seek care until they have developed symptoms or worse, are in the late stages of diabetes. As theJAMAstudy shows, only 26 percent of diabetes patients in China were treated for this condition, and among those treated, only 40 percent had adequate glycemic control. It is therefore imperative for the government to construct a diabetes prevention and control system that raises awareness of the disease, promotes healthier life styles, enables early identification of the disease and risk factors, and encourages timely and effective treatment and interventions. The group also offers continuing education programs for health professionals on the latest in diabetes management. Proceeds also benefit Camp Kandu and Helping Hands, Mississippi-based organizations helping residents with diabetes. Camp Kandu is the only camp in the state for children with diabetes and their families. Money is also given to the Sweet Subject program, educating school staff about caring for kids with diabetes in school settings. “Gulfport was (the site of) our first walk back in 1994 and we did a walk every year until Katrina hit and we had to stop for several years during that time,” said Irena McClain, associate director of the foundation. The walk was revived in 2012 at a different location, but the foundation hopes to make Jones Park its permanent home.

Influence of the Law on Diabetes Prevention and Control Studied

Factors That Predict Cancer in Lung Nodules Detected on CT Scan

This is attributable, in part, to low adoption of evidence-based interventions for diabetes prevention and control. “Laws, including statutes, ordinances, and government agency rules and regulations, can support interventions to prevent and control disease in various ways,” comments lead author, Anthony D. Moulton, PhD, Laboratory Science, Policy and Practice Program Office, Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA. “Laws can help shape environments to reduce exposure to some type 2 diabetes risk factors and encourage preventive behaviors, and laws can authorize or require provision of prevention-oriented information designed to change the behaviors and cultural norms that affect risk.” Dr. Moulton and his team evaluated existing guidelines, recommendations, and standards from 12 public health and medical organizations. They uncovered 47 guidelines in total: 20 for diabetes control and 27 for type 2 diabetes risk reduction and prevention.

Genetic Variants Linked With Blood Pressure Discovered

The 19-site meta-analysis, involving nearly 30,000 African-Americans, also found that the set of genetic mutations are also associated with blood pressure across other populations. Co-senior author Xiaofeng Zhu, PhD Epidemiology and biostatistics professor, said that in addition to their disproportionate suffering, hypertension occurs earlier in life for African-Americans compared to individuals of other ancestries. Zhu and his colleagues also confirmed that previous findings regarding other genes whose presence correlates with increased hypertension risk. Zhu said that although it is unknown how the genes regulate blood pressure and that their findings contribute to better understanding of blood pressure pathways that can lead to future development of drug target for hypertension and may guide therapy for clinical care. Experts estimate genetic make-up accounts for roughly 40-50 percent of individuals’ susceptibility to hypertension. Other factors associated with the disease include lifestyle, diet, and obesity.
